Sen. Schumer's Remarks on Alito Nomination

So what's wrong with Alito as a Supreme Court nominee according to Schumer?
  • He's a conservative.
  • He's not a woman or a minority.
  • He is not "mainstream" enough [according to Schumer] like Sandra Day O'Connor.
  • He will not [according to Schumer] "unify" the country like Sandra Day O'Connor did?
So did we really need a press conference from Schumer to tell us that Bush was nominating a conservative? No, but that wasn't what this press conference was really about. Schumer is already running for President. And the most interesting message in his remarks was this:
"It is an immutable law of history that when a president tries to govern from the extreme, his presidency and the country end up losing. Democrats learned this when we governed from the far left. President Bush will learn this as well."
Translation...Gore/Kerry/Dean etc. couldn't win because they were too far left and Hillary is just like them. I [Schumer] am "mainstream" and I can beat the conservatives.

Forty Years

My wife Joy and I celebrated our 40 th wedding anniversary this past weekend with our children and grand-children. We were on lovely Sea Island, Georgia watching this spectacular sunrise and wondering how it was possible that forty years could have gone by so quickly. We had a lot of fun telling all the old stories about how we met, and courted, and married, and brought up the kids. Lots of laughs and a few tears as well. We've been through good times and bad together. We've both worked hard, had a few disappointments, but basically have accomplished mostly good things. We've had good health, loving families, good friends, three fine sons we're very proud of, wonderful daughter's-in-law who are perfect for our boys, and four of the best grandchildren ever. Life doesn't really get any better than that. We've really been blessed and we thank God for that. Now we're working to keep our health and live to celebrate forty more.

50th Anniversary

This past May my wife and I celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary. The time has passed quickly but it certainly doesn't seem like 50 years. Like most, we've had our ups and downs in fifty years, but on the whole have been blessed with good health, three fine sons and nine grandchildren. Looking forward to the next chapter.
